Solid wood vs MDF kitchen cabinets in the UAE

Solid wood vs MDF is usually asked as if kitchen cabinets were made of one material. They seldom are. A cabinet is a box, the carcass, with a door hung on it, and the two parts live different lives: the box stands against a wall and just above a mopped floor, close to the pipes, while the door takes steam, hands and whatever the room's air is doing. In a UAE home, air-conditioned for most of the year and with a sink base that sees the odd leak, the right answer is often a different material for each part.

The table has no price row, and that is deliberate. Not one published UAE cabinet band names the board it is built from, so there is no sourced figure for what solid wood adds over MDF. The only fair comparison is two quotes for the same units, one in each material.

Why does MDF swell in a UAE kitchen?

Because MDF is wood fibre held together by resin, and water at an exposed edge wicks in between the fibres and pushes them apart. The face of a board is sealed by its paint, lacquer or laminate. The cut edges, the drilled hinge holes and the underside of a sink base often are not. Once swollen, the board stays swollen, and hinges and runners screwed into it work loose.

A kitchen supplies the water in small, regular doses: a weeping trap under the sink, the steam that rolls out when a dishwasher is opened early, the daily mop along the plinth, a kettle parked under a wall unit. Moisture-resistant MDF slows the damage and sealed edges stop most of it. The same mechanism is why a cabinet makeover fails on older units: new doors on a carcass whose sink base has already swollen will not hang true.

Does solid wood crack in an air-conditioned home?

It can, if the design ignores movement. Timber takes up and gives off moisture with the air around it, and it swells and shrinks across its grain as it does, far more than along it. A kitchen kept cool and dry by air conditioning for months, with a door opening onto a humid terrace or garden, puts timber through that cycle. Wide slab doors made from solid boards are the ones that cup or split. Frame-and-panel doors, where the centre panel floats in a groove, let the wood move without damage.

Paint gives the movement away. A painted solid-wood door shows it as hairline cracks where the frame's joints meet, which is why most painted kitchen doors are MDF. Stained or oiled timber hides the same movement, and it is the one door that can be sanded back and refinished when it wears.

Is veneered MDF a middle way?

For many kitchens, yes. A veneer is a thin slice of real timber glued over an MDF core, so the door looks like wood and stays as flat as MDF. It takes a stain or oil and can be lightly refinished, though the veneer is too thin for a deep sanding. Its edges need the same care as any MDF: banded and sealed all round, above all on doors next to the sink and the dishwasher.

Plywood is the other material to know by name. It is built from thin veneers laid crosswise, so it stays stable, grips screws well and puts up with an occasional wetting better than fibreboard, which makes it the carcass to ask for where leaks are likely, starting under the sink.

Does the material change the price or the approval?

The approval, no. The Dubai rulebooks that mention cabinets, Town Square's manual and Nakheel's 2023 villa codes, class a cabinet job by what it changes, not by what the boxes are made of: Town Square files the removal and replacement of kitchen cabinets as a minor alteration at AED 1,000 whatever the board, and Nakheel's 2023 codes listed cabinet replacement among the works that needed no NOC. The price, probably yes, though nobody publishes by how much. The published bands begin at AED 12,000 for new cabinets in a small kitchen and run past AED 120,000 where joinery is imported, without naming a board at any level. What to write on a cabinet quote for a humid kitchen

1. The board for each part, carcass, back panel, shelves, plinth and doors, with the grade named: moisture-resistant MDF, plywood or solid timber.
2. Edge banding on every cut edge, including the hidden ones at the back and underneath, and the hinge holes sealed.
3. The sink base built from plywood or a sealed moisture-resistant board, with a liner or tray under the trap.
4. The door construction: frame-and-panel for solid wood, and the finish for each face, lacquer, veneer, laminate or oil.
5. Adjustable legs behind the plinth, so the carcass stands clear of a mopped floor.
6. Extraction ducted to outside air where the building allows it, so cooking steam leaves the room instead of settling on the doors.
